Description
Praça do Comércio is one of Lisbon’s most iconic public spaces, offering visitors a unique blend of history, architecture, and daily life. Located along the Tagus River, this grand square was rebuilt after the devastating 1755 earthquake, a moment that shaped its elegant neoclassical design. The buildings surrounding the square create a harmonious and balanced aesthetic, reflecting the ambitions of the Marquis of Pombal, who oversaw Lisbon’s reconstruction.
Historically, Praça do Comércio was the city’s main gateway for trade and commerce, a fact still evident in its broad, open layout and proximity to the waterfront. Today, it is much more than a historic site. It’s a lively gathering place where locals and tourists enjoy the cafés, restaurants, and street performances that fill the area. The central statue of King José I on horseback anchors the space, a subtle reminder of the city’s resilience and renewal.
